thebinaries:

And the arms of the ocean are carrying me,
And all this devotion was rushing out of me,
And the crashes are heaven for a sinner like me,
But the arms of the ocean delivered me.

Though the pressure’s hard to take,
It’s the only way I can escape,
It seems a heavy choice to make,
Now I am under.

‘Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life.
Try to make ends meet.
Try to find some money, then you die.

if you could only see the beast you’ve made of me.
i held it in, but now it seems you’ve set it running free.
screaming in the dark, i howl when we’re apart.
drag my teeth across your chest to taste your beating heart

my fingers claw your skin, try to tear my way in.
you are the moon that breaks the night for which i have to howl.
my fingers claw your skin, try to tear my way in.
you are the moon that breaks the night for which i have to

howl…

Forever Gilderoy/Barty. Oh yes.

Jackson recorded “smile” at the Hit Factory in New York in 1994. The song was recorded live in the studio with a complete orchestra. “They rehearsed a bit without vocals in, then during the first take Michael sang, [he] just knocked them out of their chairs,” recalled assistant engineer Rob Hoffman. “The take we did that day was amazing and perfect,” remembers Bruce Swedien, Jackson’s longtime sound engineer. “But Michael is such a perfectionist that he insisted on recording his vocals again the next day.” Ultimately, they ended up keeping the first version.  “I think I’ve worked with everyone, seriously,” said acclaimed British orchestra conductor and producer Jeremy Lubbock. “But my most memorable recording session remains Michael Jackson’s ‘Smile’ from the HIStory album. Great song, great artist, painless!” Indeed, after recording the song, Jackson went in to thank the orchestra and received a standing ovation. “During the recording,” recalls Swedien, “They had been listening to Michael sing through their individual headphones. When Michael walked out in the studio… Every member of the fifty-piece orchestra stood up and tapped their music stands with their bows, as loud as they could. Jeremy [Lubbock] stood on the conductor’s podium and also applauded as loud as he could. I was applauding by myself in the control room as loud as i could!”

“Smile” has subsequently become a classic in Michael Jackson’s catalog. Biographer J. Randy Tarabolli described the track as a ‘stand out’ on HIStory: “What a vocal performance and delivery he gives to this song! Never has he sounded more sincere more gorgeous.” The New York Times called it “a dramatic tour de force. Over quivering strings and a nonchalant piano, Jackson sounds like he’s barely holding back tears. His voice trembles, breaks, pulls together and heads for another emotional brink. It ends with an indrawn breath, a sob on the verge of crying jag.”
